Land area: 30,000 km2; Physical characteristics: plains region dominated by grasslands, north characterized by rolling wooded savannah, east dominated by Ngorongoro massif; Climate: wet season November-December and February-April; Annual rainfall: 400–1200 mm; Status: mosaic of national parks, wildlife reserves and communally owned lands, with some private lands, spanning the Kenya-Tanzania border; Major ethnic groups: Maasai, Kuria, Sukuma, Datoga, Ikoma, Isenye, Chagga; Wildlife: wildebeests, gazelle, zebra, impala, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, 200 species of birds; Major problems: land-use conflicts, poaching
