ABSTRACT

In the last chapter I argued that according to the Manusmr. ti, the only desire that plays a necessary role in motivating action is a desire to do what one does. Medha¯tithi analyzes the Manusmr. ti’s advice to eliminate desire as the advice to eliminate the desire for the phala of nityakarmas. Since nityakarmas do not produce results, an agent should not desire any result. They should perform nityakarmas motivated by a desire to perform that very action, because it is prescribed by the vidhis of s´a¯stra.
