ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider ways in which ICT can enhance learning in a variety of subject domains, through a focus on subject design initiatives (SDIs) in modern foreign languages (MFL), music and geography. Through the use of detailed case studies we explore teachers’ considerations when integrating ICT into learning situations and the decisions that were made, particularly in relation to notions of freedom and constraint within the classroom. The chapter aims to:

• explore ways in which technology can liberate and constrain learning;

• explore issues surrounding the teachers’ consideration of freedom and constraints within classroom settings;

• compare work within the three subject areas in relation to ‘liberating constraints’.
