ABSTRACT
For the oceanographer, the solar physicist, the atmospheric chemist or the glaciologist, sea level rise is a subtle sideshow to the greenhouse effect. Ask an expert in sea defence about it, and the problem will probably be described in terms of keeping water and land in their present positions. Ask planners, agriculturalists or applied scientists, and it is a new development calling for practical solutions in farming, land use, urban design or some other area.
