ABSTRACT

There are four general policy options that have been developed in different countries and in different periods to regulate prostitution. These are regulationism, decriminalisation, legalisation, and prohibition. At the most general level the policy debate has centred around the advantages and disadvantages of each of these policy options. Although it is possible, and indeed necessary, to examine these options in their essential forms, the selection of the most appropriate option is complicated by a number of considerations.
