ABSTRACT

The so-called ‘schizophrenic credit’ (Claridge, 1985), in contrast to the oftresearched schizophrenic deficit, more commonly is to be found at the transitional zone between sanity and psychosis. Schizotypal individuals (Claridge, 1988, 1990, 1997; Stefanis et al., 2004) may occasionally wander into psychotic styles of cognition but generally their psychoticism, to the advantage of their creativity, is suffused through their personality rather than manifesting itself in specific delusions and hallucinations, word-salad speech or serious disorganisation of their identity. This can give them considerable advantages particularly in spiritual sensitivity, sensitivity generally and originality of ideation. If they present themselves for treatment, however, it tends to be because of problems with anxiety and depression (APA, 1994).
