ABSTRACT

Support staff working in schools Half a million support staff working in schools, of which 152,800 are teaching assistants, play an essential role in improving outcomes for children and young people in relation to promoting their learning, health and well-being. There are around 30 different types of support staff job roles in schools, that contribute to pupils achieving the five Every Child Matters outcomes. Some support staff may undertake two or more roles within a school, or between schools, for example, a teaching assistant may also work as a midday supervisor.
