ABSTRACT
The nine case studies illustrate the difficulties facing policymakers of developing countries in providing minimal conditions of survival and well-being for their populations. Each country examined has been beset by crises, sometimes short-term, other times deeply rooted and structural, that threaten the viability of its economic foundations, its social structures, and the integrity of its natural resource base.
