ABSTRACT

This case study deals with the problems of land degradation and diminishing crop productivity in Botswana. The benefits and costs of collective fencing from private and social perspectives are discussed. Insufficient data were available to actually estimate the present value of net benefits but the paper outlines the major benefit and cost categories and shows how a full economic evaluation would be carried out. The objective of studies such as this is to encourage greater use of economic assessment techniques within Botswana.
