ABSTRACT

Humanity is kept going as much – and more, in most places – by women’s work as by men’s. A mere increase in numbers of women workers does not signify an advance towards economic and social equality, nor towards a more realistic evaluation of work. A thousand Indonesian girls crammed into a garment factory which in Britain would accommodate no more than 250 is not progress. Working a twelve-to-sixteen-hour day is not progress, whether in a factory or a home.
