ABSTRACT

In addition to the initiatives being taken by individual organisations (Chapter 5) and by industry associations and professional groups (Chapter 6) a variety of initiatives are being taken under a broad heading of 'industrial ecology' and within communities. In this chapter industrial ecology is considered first, followed by various kinds of community renewal and then some interesting examples of visioning the future. These examples are brought together in one chapter because they share a common characteristic of cooperation between people, businesses, voluntary organisations and local authorities. They are designed to be economically viable, to enhance environmental health, reduce environmental damage, provide employment, be socially responsible and make progress towards sustainable communities. Examples are used to indicate the creative ways in which people in different communities are making progress towards new, innovative solutions. The starting points and the action taken vary, showing that there is no single best way forward.
