ABSTRACT

Other warnings about trees in farming systems could be made: some argue that they make the rich richer and the poor poorer; they reduce the yields of certain crops; they harbour crop pests and evil spirits; and they can lower the water table. "Agroforestry" does not succeed everywhere, and one needs to be particularly wary of the presumption that it works well for resource-poor farmers. There are many cases of agroforestry and social forestry innovations or external projects that result in the expropriation of resources from communal use, or use by poor people, or by specific groups, particularly women.2
