ABSTRACT

Transport is becoming faster and more effi cient, and there is no better indicator of this trend than the relentless growth of average distance travelled per person per day. Such mobility comes with an environmental price tag, and the eff ects of transport on the environment are wide-ranging. Some of the major issues are summarized in Table 16.1; they include air pollution and noise from road and air traffi c, and marine pollution from shipping (see Chapter 6). e transport sector of economies is also a major consumer of resources, including energy, minerals and land.
