ABSTRACT

The benefits of using energy in an efficient manner are so numerous that it is difficult to believe that conservation and efficiency measures are not more widely implemented. Aside from a reduction in the need for energy imports, energy efficiency offers the potential for delaying the depletion of non-renewable natural resources. However, for a number of reasons, but particularly the relatively low price of oil on the international market, and the linkage between oil prices and the price of other fuels, conservation measures have only been partly effective. Energy conservation and efficiency strategies can play an important role in helping to meet energy demands in developing countries and regions where an adequate and reliable supply of energy is not always available to meet social and economic demands (Schweitzer, 1993).
