ABSTRACT
Low-grade fuels are upgraded and processed in many ways. Procedures are carried out to achieve a cleaner burning fuel, to increase the calorific value of the fuel by weight, as an interim step in the production of chemical feedstocks or as preparation for use in industry or power production. Fuels may be upgraded to liquid or gaseous form, or they may be compressed to produce a fuel with a greater bulk density.
