ABSTRACT

Zambia has a complex mosaic of biomass classes. However, broad patterns within these classes can be determined from the interpretations of the satellite images. Much of the country is covered by miombo woodlands which are currently extending at the expense of other types of woodland. These range from closed canopy to open, sparse woodlands. Other types of woodland dominate the rest of the country and it is only around the swamps, on some of the alluvial soils, and in areas of extensive shifting cultivation, that the woodland component in the biomass classes is low.
