ABSTRACT

Munga lived in a village on the outskirts of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan in NW India. She was 20 years old and expecting her third child. She already had a daughter and a son. When her labour pains started, she called for Samina (her father’s younger brother’s wife) and Munaan an elderly relative, both known in the local area for their expertise in birthing babies. A boy was born at 6 p.m. that day. Samina and Munaan left shortly after this. Munga continued to bleed profusely and twice vomited the milk she was given to drink. Six hours later, at 1 a.m., she died.
