ABSTRACT
Following from Chapter 4’s discussion of NGOs in relation to the ideas and practices of ‘alternative’ development which emerged during the 1980s, and the increased emphasis on development as practice which many NGOs encouraged during the 1990s, we can now turn to focus in more detail on the main roles that NGOs currently play within contemporary development practice.
