ABSTRACT

Programme Overview Through community participation and advocacy, the Ecological Waste Management project aims to reduce waste and improve solid-waste management in and around a public market in the city of Manila. Initiated in 1993, and modelled on a successful initiative in the nearby town of Sta Maria, the progranune is a multisectoral partnership involving the local and national governments, the private sector, a local cooperative and an international agency. The project's goals are to promote a cleaner and healthier living environment for citizens in Manila's Paco district, to clean up the local canal, and to protect market vendors' livelihoods by making them competitive with cleaner markets. The project is pursuing its goals by reorienting squatters' and market vendors' attitudes towards refuse disposal, and encouraging changes in their habits.
