ABSTRACT

In the still swirling Whitehall waters, some took advantage of the confusion. Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Oldfield 148 of MI6 reported to Trend that MoD’s John Drew had recently lunched with Pincher, and heard of an imminent Daily Express book on the cable-vetting affair. Drew told Oldfield he was discreetly running Denning for the Secretaryship, and that meanwhile the D-Notice machinery was in complete disarray, and not being ‘resuscitated in any recognisable form’. When Oldfield asked whether he had told his PUS all this, Drew replied he was not going talk to Dunnett about anything, but Oldfield could use the information as he wished. 149
