Japanese religion adrift: A re-examination of ‘religion’ in post-war Japan

Introduction: Japan in the world In the midst of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 on New York and Washington, DC I was struck by the following scene. On the night of the attacks, President Bush made a television address in which he paid tribute to the victims and, quoting Psalm 23 from the Old Testament, called on the families of the deceased to recover their perseverance and courage.
