ABSTRACT

I would like to start this chapter by considering the relation between religions and the state in Japan right after the end of the Second World War. Imagine a kind of evacuated state. If we evacuate some container, it immediately comes under pressure from every direction. This analogy makes it easier for us to understand what happens when an evacuated state of mind occurs on the scale of a whole society or nation. In a moment various religions, thoughts and values would insist on their own validity and try to steal in from all sides.
