ABSTRACT

Collect information to create a student profile before an EAL learner enters the class. This could include:

n Name and nickname – many cultures use a name different to their formal name

n Date of birth n Arrival date in the country n Previous schooling and dates of absences n Place of birth n Religion n If the child lives with both parents as part

of a family unit n Dietary needs n Mother’s and father’s name n Most useful written language for the family n Names and ages of siblings n Languages spoken at home by mother,

father, siblings and grandparents n Languages used by family members to

child n If the child can read and/or write in

languages other than English n If the child attends mother tongue

lessons. (Based on Hall, 2001)

This information should be used by class teachers before the learner arrives in class to ensure the child’s needs and any special considerations are identified as quickly as possible.
