ABSTRACT
Relative to business associations, village elections are a direct measure through which to observe the differences in political competition and participation. The key question of this book, if marketization will lead to democracy, is tested more closely in this chapter. Village elections in the two regions were strikingly different. In Sunan, village elections were controlled and quiet; while in Wenzhou, they were open and competitive.
