ABSTRACT
Since the late 1980s, the concept of civil society has gained great international prominence.1 It routinely features in public debates, academic writings, media reports and policy analyses on almost any issue of current concern. Civil society organizations, notably non-governmental organizations (NGOs), have also enjoyed a spectacular growth over this period, receiving increased support from multilateral institutions, governments, the corporate sector and the general public.
