Latvians in Britain to mobilise support for their campaigns, even though Mr K, as the British press called Kruschev, had taken tea with the Queen in April that year.
A key part of the long campaign to regain Latvian independence has been the struggle to gain British recognition of the Soviet deportations from Latvia during and after the war (in 1941, 1944 and 1949) and several of the women to whom I talked showed me the letters they had written and the postcard campaigns (see Plate 8.2) that they had been involved in over many years.
