ABSTRACT

Tutor’s notes The ability to estimate is important in the ordinary activities in adult life. There are several aspects of estimation but the aspect used in this lesson may be described as ‘realising whether an answer is reasonable’. This grows from early visual comparison of sets of items in terms of ‘more’ or ‘less’, to estimating whether the number of items in a set of objects is ‘more than’, or ‘less than’ a given number. The final stage uses the language of estimation; ‘too high’, ‘too low’ and ‘reasonable’.
