ABSTRACT

Measurement provides a ‘natural way’ into the development of number concepts, handling data and life skills.

Although students would have heard the names of standard measurements, for example, litres, metres and kilograms, these are not used at the pre-entry level, or in the P scales. At this level of development, the aim is to help students understand the process of measurement and to compare a variety of real things. The focus is on understanding the ‘whole’ and the numbers and names focus the student’s attention on a ‘particular’ difference.
