Tutor’s notes This lesson has been designed to provide students with an opportunity to rehearse rapid recognition of both number symbols and quantities.

The activity is introduced as a whole class game and involves the use of ordinary playing cards Ace to 10. The use of two colours (red and black) and four different shapes (hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds) on the cards is useful in finetuning the concept that cardinality is dependant neither on colour nor shape.
