ABSTRACT

Our lives are now extraordinarily intertwined with those of people living in distant lands. We are influenced by an increasingly globalised spread of information, goods and ideas. The food we eat, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to and the books we read are infused with the views and experiences of distant others; so too are the ideas we are exposed to about culture, politics and religion. These processes of globalisation have been advanced by developments in transportation and electronic communications, in particular the advent of the internet. The world is now seemingly smaller than ever and we are all citizens of a global society.
