ABSTRACT

ADAMS, MARILYN J. An American specialist in cognition and education, she has published a number of books and journal articles on learning to read, including Beginning to Read: Thinking and learning about print (Cambridge Mass.: MIT Press, 1990). Adams makes a clear distinction between graphic and phonic cue systems in learning to read. She is often cited to support phonic approaches, but she believes reading skills should be situated in a programme of good quality and interesting reading materials.
