ABSTRACT

In this chapter we shall be looking at the part played by language and traditional stylistic and rhetorical devices in narrative discourse. Scarcely any attention has been paid to this in classical narrative theory. I am primarily concerned with the status of stylistic features in relation to the quasi-universal structures which are generally assumed to underlie narrative texts.
