ABSTRACT
The campaign claiming that the rising prevalence of autism is due to the increase in childhood immunisations containing the mercury-based preservative thimerosal (thiomersal in the UK) took off following the publication in 2001 of a paper by four parent activists provocatively entitled ‘Autism: a novel form of mercury poisoning’ (Bernard et al. 2001).
