ABSTRACT
In many applications the categorical response variable has more than two categories. An example here is the type of sentence awarded by the court, and in the data presented in Table 3.1 there were four sentences: custody, community penalty, fine and discharge. Another example from political science is the vote for a political party and later we examine the preference expressed at the 1997 general election between the three parties, Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat.
