ABSTRACT

Across the continents, from Manhattan to Melbourne to Mumbai, one Olympian above all remains insistently present. On top of civic buildings, inside courts of law, even on desk lamps for lawyers and advertisements for television shows, the figure of Justice is instantly recognizable by her sword, her scales and very often her blindfold too. This is Themis, the personification of divine justice and order. Paradoxically, the most hidden of the Olympian deities is now the most visible: it seems that the contemporary world, in all its administrative complexities, still needs reminders of this energy (Figures 6.1 and 6.2).
