ABSTRACT

The four previous chapters described ways of controlling desertification by making land uses more productive and sustainable. This chapter looks at projects which either reclaim land that has already been highly desertified, or prevent the spread of desertification by introducing soil conservation practices and stabilizing sand dunes that are encroaching on to farmland. Projects of this kind usually take place in areas where the social, economic and environmental impacts of desertification are already so serious that local people either request the help of governments and non-governmental organizations in saving their lands from further degradation or eagerly take advantage of such assistance when it is offered. Soil conservation and land reclamation, together with afforestation, account for the majority of current projects to control desertification.
