ABSTRACT

Here we pull together issues and ideas and draw some critical conclusions. Importantly, we highlight the implications of these discussions for future conservation management, for economic development, and in terms of pressing academic research needs. The issues of alien and exotic species, of invaders, of deliberate introductions and of reintroductions, are complex and frequently misunderstood. While the economic, ecological and even human consequences of invasive and often exotic species cannot be disputed, the underlying causes and responses often remain unrecognized. An objective of this book has been to raise awareness and to broaden the discussion to embrace a range of academic disciplines and insights.
