ABSTRACT

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Dr Ali Akbar Velayati, made his first visit to the newly united Germany in mid-February 1991. During the visit, Germany and Iran expressed their mutual hope that Iraq would comply with the Security Council resolutions on the basis of which the Gulf War could be brought to a conclusion. The German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, together with his Iranian counterpart, Dr Velayati, announced their concurrence that after the war, as they expressed it, “Iraq’s territorial integrity must not be damaged.” Foreign Minister Velayati also met the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. The Chancellor assured Dr Velayati that he would do everything possible to convince the Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, of the necessity of an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait.
