ABSTRACT

Often the most important activation assignments lead to immediate increases in feelings of depression, anxiety or other discomfort. Other assignments elicit negative thoughts or painful memories. Getting out of bed in the morning is hard. Exercising requires continued effort in the presence of fatigue, aches, and cramps. Looking for a job, updating one's reÂsumeÂ, applying for jobs, and going on interviews all raise self-doubt, self-criticism, and thoughts of continued failure and rejection. These private consequences can be important factors in controlling inactivity and establishing strong competing contingencies against activity.
