ABSTRACT

Understanding the principles that underpin the management of the child with a neurological dysfunction is essential to ensure the delivery of care is safe and appropriate. This chapter will outline the principles of care regarding: diagnostic procedures, managing raised intracranial pressure, intracranial pressure monitoring, the management of seizures and status epilepticus, the management of the unconscious child, rehabilitation, and meeting the emotional and psychological needs of the child and family. These general principles need to be adapted to each situation, and to the child and family’s individual needs. In additional there will be a comprehensive account of undertaking a detailed neurological assessment of the child.
