ABSTRACT
Probably the most complex aspect which undermines the conservationist approach in Costa Rica relates to tensions and conflicts which arise when the interests of different groups or agents are affected by regulations governing protected areas. Social conflict in and around protected areas has generally been associated with four aspects: the way protected areas have been established; the process of land acquisition; the invasion and occupation of land in protected areas; and resource use in such areas.
