ABSTRACT

As described in Point 5, a central premise of MBCT is that the mind operates in different modes. A key intention of the programme is to enable participants to recognise the mode of mind that they are in, and to be able to intentionally shift from one mode to another. This happens in the momentÐthe ability to ``wake up'' while in the midst of things in daily life can take the form of a momentary sense of awareness of the sensations of the feet on the ¯oor or of the breath. In that moment, instead of being caught up with whatever mind state predominates we change perspective; we can be aware of what is happening; an opportunity has opened up to think and act differently.
