ABSTRACT

A signi®cant part of this ®rst session is spent on building a supportive environment for the work that will be done in the weeks ahead. The teaching process is intended to help participants in beginning to recognise the tendency that we have to be on automatic pilot and the effects this has on our lives. Participants see that simply bringing attention deliberately to an everyday object (a raisin) has the effect of changing the nature of the experience of this object. In practising the body scan participants see that purposefully moving attention to different places in the body is both a simple thing to do and yet is tremendously challengingÐthe mind seems to have its own ideas about where it will go!
