ABSTRACT

Caring for the Earth and Agenda 21 recognize that information on population and its environmental impact will be basic to the process of integrating population in strategies for sustainable development. Such an integration can begin with a review of basic population conditions. Much of the data for such reviews are normally included in national development plans, and are also typically generated in population censuses or in demographic surveys. What is needed for effective integration of population in sustainable development planning, however, goes considerably beyond what is usually included in the demographic component of national development plans. Such integration calls for a review that examines specifically the links between population and the environment, or a national population environment review (NPER).
