ABSTRACT

An extremely important consideration, both in new construction and refurbishment work, is the provision of good thermal insulation to the external envelope in order to minimise heat loss, reduce heating costs, conserve fuel resources, reduce environmental pollution and maximise thermal comfort. Since the 1970s, the importance of providing adequate thermal insulation has been reflected by several changes to the Building Regulations, which now demand considerably greater standards of thermal insulation than were required earlier. It is therefore likely that most buildings that undergo refurbishment today will not, as they stand, comply with current Building Regulations regarding thermal insulation.
