ABSTRACT
Overview The future of US foreign aid continued to be an uncertain one during 1996. The US Congress slashed bilateral and multilateral aid programmes in 1996 by over $1000 million or over 15% from the 1995 level - one of the largest cuts ever made in US aid and one of the sharpest cuts of any programme in the federal budget. Both development assistance and food aid felt the squeeze.
