ABSTRACT

Overview Japan has been the world’s largest aid donor since 1991. But 1996 became the year that Japan’s ODA was cut dramatically. Net disbursement was 1.04 trillion (thousand, thousand million) yen, a 24.8% decrease in yen terms compared with financial year (FY) 1995. In dollars, at US$ 9600 million, Japanese aid has fallen by 35%. Aid represents only 0.21% of GNP, compared with 0.28% in 1995.
