Donor programmes to support gender equity in education Until recently, gender equity was not an explicit objective of donor assistance programmes in edu­ cation, nor was it articulated in education policy by the Zimbabwe government. The concept of gender equity in education has, however, been gathering momentum over the past three years, spearheaded by efforts by UNICEF, which have concentrated on highlighting the plight of the girl child. UNICEF’s initiatives have been in the form of research and awareness campaigns that focus mainly on sensi­ tising policy makers, educationalists, parents and the general public to the plight of the girl child through organising and funding workshops and seminars and producing reading materials (such as Mwanasikana) collaboratively with the Ministry of Education.
