ABSTRACT

The discussion in chapters two and three showed clearly that for the victims famine is much more insidious than a rapid slide into mass starvation. It is a crisis brought about primarily by the clash between the systems people use to exploit their environment and the stability of the resource base (economic, political and natural). In the normal run of events, as the environment changes, people evolve new systems to cope with the challenge. If the environment evolves rapidly, the exploitation system used may not be able to keep up and the linkages between the two may break down. One result of this is the process we call famine.
