ABSTRACT
The UK national government, through its Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG), is wholeheartedly endorsing the creation and maintenance of prosperous and cohesive communities (Kelly 2006). They believe that, through effective and widespread policy, extensive cultural and economic programmes and citizen involvement, communities can be safe, healthy and sustainable. These ideas are being promoted heavily through the government’s planning system, whereby more and more decision-makers and stakeholders in the private and public sectors are expected to address community and sustainability in building and urban design and development projects (Boyko et al. 2005).
